yes, because we have more privileges and advantages compared to the people who just arrived in Australia.

no, I don't think their reasons are always clear even to them but they may have chosen to move to Australia as this country is safer.

How do pioneers' lives change when they come to Australia?
They have a different kind of home and have a different kind of environment. they also adapt to the religions here.

What elements do they choose to bring with them when they migrate? And which do they reject? Why?
They bring over traditional ways to choose a home that is for them chosen by one of their gods/beliefs. It is unclear as to what things they have rejected but they continued with their religion despite being in a new environment.

What tricks do the pioneers learn to assist them in belonging in Australian culture ?
I think that at the end where the child talked about having the Mary and Joseph's figure on his bedside kind of showed how he tries to fit in to this new environment through religious beliefs.

How do the lyrics of "Dancing Queen" contrast to Muriel's life in Porpoise Spit?

The song lyrics of "Dancing Queen" completely contrasts Muriel's life in Porpoise Spit. This is clear as Muriel is not seventeen but in her twenty's. She does go partying/ clubbing but she is not considered 'hot' or sexy that she will attract several guys just by dancing. I also believe that she does not have the guts or confidence to simply brush off several guys, if they even decided to make a move on her, then leave them hanging. Instead she would be the type to simply follow like a fool towards any guy who comes towards her. The song also portrays a person who has a lively, fun, free and happy life, in contrast, Muriel does not have such a life. What she has is a life where she is miserable and constantly has her self esteem put down by those around her, obviously, not so happy, free or fun.

To My Younger Self,

I bet you're infront of a computer right now xD. Try not to stay in front of it for too long. I know there's nothing else to do and you would be bored but try doing something else like reading even though you hate it. It will help in the future. Don't hate or think of tutor as a waste of time or as a chore, think of it as an opportunity to hone your skills and learn. By the way, watch out for that huge desk where the piano is when you end up playing with your brother. Try not to be too hard on people and smile more~~~~ haha put some more emotions on your face please. Another thing to know is that, how others may end up is none of your business, just take care of yourself and everything else will follow for themselves. Don't poke your nose into unnecessary things, just continue your own path, as to whether this path will be followed by others... just dont think about it. Oh and go cause some trouble at school while you still can. What is the point of a school life with no excitement ? Don't fear and run forward and try not to procrastinate.

Looking up at mum, she looks scary. I don't really like mum, I prefer dad. I tend to go to dad more than mum. I talk to him about stuff and I try to avoid talking to mum. We always end up in an argument. Sometimes, I think she hates me. She's so strict when it comes to how we act when we go out to have meals with her friends as a family and our studies too. I hate it when I have tutors, mum's always bugging me about studies. I feel like I've been chained and caged. The only thing that lets me out of this place is school but I don't really socialise much at school, I'm always with Vicky. I guess the only other thing that I love the most would be playing those online games, takes me away from everything just like entering another world. I always wonder why I'm even here. I mean, what's the point.

Now, I still continue to wonder about the point in being in this world but as I look down upon my mum and see the strands of grey hair beginning to show. I understand that she loves me and I thank her for all her actions during my childhood, making me who I am today. Despite what I had thought at the time. Sometimes I regret why mum didn't continue to press forward in getting me to continue learning violin and piano or for me to try harder. I sometimes regret that I chose to not continue or did not practice harder but then again having this regret would not change anything. I prefer talking to mum now, I sometimes more or less hate seeing dad. I have grown closer to mum these past years and after a few events I see mum in a different light. She is actually very weak hearted inside. She needs a lot of care and is very dependant on others in many ways. I simply wonder how much our relationship will change in the future. Other than that, I guess it is important to just live in the moment and have as much fun while you still can. I have a wider variety of friends now and get out of the house more often too. You can say that my world has grew bigger and with it comes even more problems, worries, joy and happiness.

My Journal Entry 05.04.1997

My third child has finally joined us today. It was a baby girl, we finally decided to name her Camille this morning. Camille Chen, following my family's last name passed down from generation to generation which carries a long history and will continue through our third child too. It is a tradition and my wife has no objection so I'm sure we made the write choice. There were several other names to choose from but out of the few we thought of before her birth, Camille was the only name that came to mind when we first met face to face in the dim lights of the hospital surrounded by darkness before dusk. This warmth and strength felt from the surrounding lights at that moment as I looked into her eyes showed that of confidence, strength and a future of a child filled with power and would surely be strong willed. Camille, a woman warrior who fought on the side of Turnus against Aeneus, nothing could have been more suitable for this child. She will surely grow up to be a wonderful woman, to have been blessed with her as our third and last child I, no, we... My wife and I look forward to the future with Camille and our other two kids.

Yes it is true that we are all able to decide who we want to become but we are unable to change who are already. We cannot turn back time and change who our parents are but we can become whoever we wish to become. There are many cases where people of the same family have moved onto following different religions. In other cases many have gone to have plastic surgery and therefore becoming someone different but the fact still remains that they were born into an Asian, black or white, rich or poor family. They can change who they become in the future but the past will always remain the same. No matter what you will still have a past where you once were of that community and participated in those cultural activities and grew up that environment. Those memories will remain with you and it is up to you decide whether if you wish to continue on the same path or go down a different road.

1. What qualities and values of people are privileged(presented positively)?
The people at the bar are presented in a more privileged manner as they seem to have fun and smile more than those that do not enter. People who are not aboriginal seem to be more privileged and better off compared to those who are. People who follow Christianity.

2. Which groups are marginalised or silenced? (presented negatively or not represented in the movie)
The aboriginal people are presented poor, scavengers, people who would do anything if you give them a little treat and are cunning and steal without hesitation. In contrast, the non aboriginal people are presented in a higher classed manner, where they have power and ruling over the aboriginal.

3. What aspects of Aboriginality are presented in a positive way? What words/images are used to portray them this way?
Aboriginals have a strong history and background that follow them no matter the path they choose to follow. This is shown when the man who practically human morals and the child that nearly followed the path of a priest were portrayed in a tribal dance. It also showed that they have a strong sense of responsibility, this is obvious when the old man continues to help this boy get home despite stealing his money and letting him go at the beginning. Even after the boy left the group to find his own way home and ended up in a fight, the old man showed up and stood up for him like he was family. It also showed the aboriginals flexibility and ability in the wild, when the van broke down the old man was able to fix it by catching a snake and using it in place of a cord/line.

4. What aspects of Aboriginality are presented in a negative way? What words or images are used to portray them this way.
When the lady who was already married jumped on the young boy, it kind of suggests that aboriginal women are like prostitutes and are not loyal. When the priest wanted information he bribed the aboriginals who were poor and strays, which suggest that they would do anything for their own benefit regardless of the consequences and that they dont really hold onto they own morals very strongly. When the van stopped at the gas station, the old man ended up teaching the boy wrong things, such as stealing which conveys to the audience that aboriginals are not well educated and cause trouble.

5. How are European Australians represented in the movie/what words/images are used to portray them this way?
The priest is presented in a manner where he stands in power and is above the aboriginal, like if they want to change anything and make a future for themselves they need his help now. As though saying that they cannot live without him and he is a very important figure to them. When the bribes the homeless aboriginals, it again shows his status and power. That he is better off then them, he is more privileged and he has the ability to make those below listen and co - operate with him.

6. How is Broome represented in the movie? ( note down words used to describe it and how images portray it as different from other places)
It is represented as a place of belonging and warmth, a place where family and friends are, a home to return to. The fact that the boy continues to return to Broome shows his attachments to the place and how the ending finished in Broome shows that it is a place where everyone is, a place where family, friends and love is. Where a community that comes together is. It is presented as more of a heaven in contrast to Perth.

7. How is Perth represented in the movie? (noted down words used to describe it and how images portray it as different from other places)
Perth is represented as a place where aboriginals do not belong, or are not welcomed. It is represented as a city in contrast to the country which is Broome. People are dressed more sophisticated and it seems to be more modern, there is more technology compared to broome and there are streets and big buildings where as Broome only has dirt roads and small sheds.

8. How is Port Headland represented in the movie? (not down words used to describe it and how images portray it as different from other places)
It is represented as an uncivilised little place, maybe smaller than Broome. Unlike Broome it has a darker side then a bright innocent side like Broome. The place seems to be more a stop off, one night stay place for travellers than a place people would want to move in and stay in the community.

The girlfriend of the priest's son show a very important type of 'Australian-ness'. She displays the values that we are very kind and caring when she decides that they take the two aboriginals back to broome despite the distance. The fact that she allowed them on the car without any caution shows how Australians are not afraid of eachother and are friendly and treat others like mates/ friends.
the priest, it shows that most Australians follow Christianity, it is one of the main religions in this country and the old man and the boy together show the aboriginal, tribal, outback side of Australia.

10. Overall what representation of "Australian-ness" does Bran Nue Dae portray? (attitudes/beliefs/ideas make someone an Australian according to the movie)
the freedom to choose their own path, the friendliness to strangers, the ability to accept aboroiginals are virtues portrayed in being Australian within the film.
